Christian Initiation of Adults

Discover the Roman Catholic Faith

The term RCIA refers to the ritual book entitled, Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults.

Christian Initiation of Adults is actually the correct term for the process of study, prayer, reflection, and discernment of those persons wishing to enter into the full communion of the Roman Catholic Church.

The process consists of a series of Periods and Steps:

               Period of Evangelization and Precatechumenate

                        First Step: Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens

               Period of the Catechumenate

                        Second Step: Election or Enrollment of Names

               Period of Purification and Enlightenment

                        Third Step: Celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation

               Period of Postbaptismal Catechesis or Mystagogy

Whom is the Christian initiation process intended for?

               Primarily, any person who has never been baptized;

               Secondly, any baptized Christian wishing to come into the full communion of the Roman Catholic Church.
